Kumejima Ocean Jet's jetfoil vessel Tsumugi arrived at Naha Port for the first time in April 2026, ahead of its May 1 commercial launch. The vessel will operate the Naha-Kumejima route (82 min) and Naha-Motobu route (60 min).
The jetfoil vessel “Tsumugi,” which will operate the Kumejima Ocean Jet service between Naha and Kumejima Island, has arrived at Naha Port for the first time. The arrival marks the beginning of crew familiarization voyages ahead of the commercial launch scheduled for May 1, 2026.
About the Vessel
Tsumugi is a Boeing 929 jetfoil, capable of carrying approximately 230 passengers. Equipped with hydrofoil technology, it lifts above the water surface at cruising speed, virtually eliminating wave-induced motion. This makes the 82-minute journey between Naha and Kumejima significantly more comfortable than conventional ferry travel, even in rough seas.
Service Routes
Kumejima Ocean Jet will operate two routes from Naha. The Kumejima route connects Naha Tomari Port to Kaneshiro Port on Kumejima Island in approximately 82 minutes. The Motobu route connects Naha to Motobu Port (former Expo area) in approximately 60 minutes, providing a sea-based alternative to the congested highway route to northern Okinawa. Summer schedule (draft): Monday/Wednesday/Friday will feature 2 Kumejima round trips plus 1 Motobu round trip, with Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday/Sunday offering the reverse pattern.

Adult one-way fare on the Kumejima route is ¥7,800 (approximately US$52). Multiple discounts are available: family rate ¥5,000, early bird (61-92 days advance) ¥5,000, senior ¥4,000, disability ¥1,000, and pet ¥1,000. The Motobu route is ¥6,800 for adults. What This Means for Travelers
Until now, reaching Kumejima Island required either a 3-4 hour ferry ride or an expensive flight. Kumejima Ocean Jet makes day trips to Kumejima possible for the first time, opening up the island’s famous Hatenohama beach, pristine diving spots, and local cuisine to a much wider audience. The Motobu route also provides a traffic-free alternative to reach Churaumi Aquarium and the upcoming JUNGLIA theme park.
