Kumejima Island offers world-class beaches and marine activities, headlined by Hatenohama — a 7 km uninhabited sandbar consistently ranked among Japan's most beautiful beaches. Other highlights include Eef Beach (calm waters ideal for families), diving at Tomori Reef and the famous "sea turtle cleaning station," and stand-up paddleboarding in crystal-clear lagoons. With the Kumejima Ocean Jet launching May 2026 (Naha to Kumejima in approximately 82 minutes in summer (Apr–Nov) / ~101 minutes in winter (Dec–Mar) for ¥7,800), day trips to these beaches are now possible for the first time. Best season: April to October for swimming, year-round for diving.

Kumejima is a subtropical island about 100 km west of Naha, known for pristine beaches, rich marine biodiversity, and UNESCO-recognized traditional textiles. This guide covers every beach and activity you can enjoy on the island, from the famous Hatenohama sandbar to lesser-known diving spots.
Kumejima Beach Guide

Hatenohama (はての浜) — Kumejima’s crown jewel. A 7 km-long sandbar of pure white sand surrounded by turquoise water, accessible only by boat (about 20–30 minutes from Eef Beach area, tours from ¥3,000–4,000). No facilities on the sandbar — bring everything you need, including water, sunscreen, and shade. Half-day and full-day tours are available. For detailed access information, see our Hatenohama Access Guide.
Eef Beach (イーフビーチ) — A 2 km white sand beach on the southeast coast. Calm, shallow waters make it ideal for families and swimming. Hotels and restaurants line the beachfront. Designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Beaches.
Shinri Beach (シンリ浜) — A quieter beach near the airport on the west coast. Popular for sunset views and less crowded than Eef Beach. Good for relaxing and beach walks.
Marine Activities

Diving: Kumejima offers excellent diving year-round. Key spots include Tomori Reef (massive coral formations), the “turtle cleaning station” where sea turtles gather, and manta ray points during summer. Water temperature ranges from 21°C (winter) to 29°C (summer). Both beginner (intro dives from ¥10,000) and certified diver courses are available.
Snorkeling: Reef snorkeling at Eef Beach and boat snorkeling tours to outer reefs are popular. Many Hatenohama tours include snorkeling time. Equipment rental is available at beach shops (¥1,000–2,000).
SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding): Calm lagoon conditions on the south coast are perfect for SUP. Rental and guided tours available (from ¥5,000 per session). Early morning sessions offer the glassiest water conditions.
Land Activities

Tatami-ishi (畳石): A natural rock formation of hexagonal stones (designated a National Natural Monument) on the southeast coast. Best viewed at low tide.
Kumejima Tsumugi (久米島紬): UNESCO-recognized traditional silk weaving. Visit the Kumejima Tsumugi no Sato workshop to see demonstrations and try your hand at weaving.
Kuruma-ebi (車えび) Cuisine: Kumejima is Japan’s top producer of farmed kuruma prawns. Don’t miss tasting them at local restaurants — fresh sashimi, tempura, or grilled.
Getting to Kumejima
